It's funny how it's somehow more menacing for him to tell Cassie he's not going to kill her than if he actually did come after her. It's a powerful way for him to demonstrate how in control he is and how insignificant she is. Anointing his victims with flower petals is deliciously creepy, and he's yet another character (along with the murdered Dr. Goines) who already knows Cole, yet who Cole has yet to encounter. Cole remains a troublingly unheroic hero, but Cassie is our point-of-entry into the story anyway. She's in way over her head, she doesn't understand all the "paradox bulls**t", but she's going with it. I like the idea that things are so bad in their 2043 that there's not much concern over the butterfly effect, except in terms of changing Cassie's trajectory so that she doesn't leave the message in 2017. I'm confused about this message though because if it exists on the timeline they're trying to obliterate, doesn't that mean that Cole's superiors should know that sending him back doesn't work?

We got a quick glimpse of Emily Hampshire's Jennifer Goines at the very end of the pilot.
Maybe I'm missing something. Cole's boss Jones (Barbara Sukowa) seems like she could be holding a lot of information back in terms of the message and the time machine and Cole's supposed "destiny". The fact that she heard "Cole" and knew it meant our James Cole makes me wonder if Cole is destined to meet a 30-something Jones during his travels. Maybe that's also why she knows to warn him about becoming too close to Cassie. The use of a scene from the 1985 claymation film The Adventures of Mark Twain was inspired. It worked on a visceral level because the clip was so sinister and somehow fitting to be playing in an insane asylum, and then on a deeper level because the movie deals with time travel and the idea of fate. Man, kids entertainment back in the day was wack. I also applaud the murder of poor Jeremy, a character whose fact-finding skills and government connections seemed awfully convenient in the pilot. So convenient that his very early exit here came as a nice surprise. Now Cassie will have to rely more heavily on her skeptical yet concerned ex-boyfriend Aaron (Noah Bean), who has got to be more involved in this than Cassie realizes, right?

I didn't care for the scene where Ramse is insisting to Cole that his time in 2015 has changed him, because that's not apparent to us as viewers yet. We haven't seen enough of him in 2043 to see any change in him and we haven't seen him enjoying 2015 much either (save for Cassie's cleanliness in the pilot and the abundant food). I suppose right now they're trying to give Kirk Acevedo something to do until he presumably becomes a more relevant character. What I did love was the confrontation between Cole and Jones. It's a fascinating dynamic in that every second they spend together in 2043 is failure. And they will never experience the satisfaction of a job well done because success means wiping their current selves out of existence. She calls him out on his selfish worldview: all he wants to do is wipe out his own existence and thus all his sins. The seven billion people who died from the virus are an abstraction to him.
